In Loving Memory of LaVona Thornton Elam

After a long journey with Alzheimer's, Vona was called home on Thursday, June 19th.

LaVona "Vona" Thornton was born on November 26, 1960, in California. During her early years, her family spent time in Germany before eventually settling in Wyoming. In middle school, they moved to Hollister, Idaho, and she attended school in Filer, Idaho, graduating from Filer High School in 1979.

She met and married Michael Elam in 1981, and together they began their life in Filer. Shortly after establishing a farm in Buhl, Idaho. This is where they raised their three children: Jodi, Willie, and Criston.

Vona had an entrepreneurial spirit and pursued various business ventures throughout her life. She owned and operated several businesses, including Vona’s Hair Salon in both Filer and Buhl, Payday Loans, and Country Flowers in Buhl. Her dedication and creativity left a lasting impression on the community.

She cherished spending time at the family cabin in the Big Smoky area of the South Fork of the Boise, where she enjoyed snowmobiling, motorcycling, and relishing the beauty of the mountains. Family and friends were always at the heart of her adventures, and her love for the mountaintops created countless cherished memories.

She's now free, whispering through the trees, smiling in the sun, and dancing among the wildflowers. We know she is enjoying the summit while barefoot and beaming. We will continue to leave her a bouquet of flowers on our every adventures in her memory.

Vona was preceded in death by her parents, Lavar and Lois Thornton, as well as her brother, LaVar Thornton. She is survived by her loving husband, Mike Elam, her children Jodi (Lee) Taylor, Willie (Stephanie) Elam, Criston Thornton, and her five grandchildren, along with a host of extended family and friends who will miss her dearly.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to DeSanos Memory Care in Jerome, Idaho, for the incredible love and care they provided over the past several years. Their compassion and support meant the world to Vona and her family.

Per Vona’s wishes, no services will be held at this time. A private gathering will be held to spread her ashes at the cabin at a later date.
