Mary Irene Wonenberg

May 23, 1939 — May 27, 2026

BUHL

Mary Irene Wonenberg was born on May 23, 1939, in Brainard, Minnesota, the fifth child of Delpha and Joseph Schelhorn. On May 27, 2026, Mary peacefully returned home to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

In her childhood, Mary's family moved from Minnesota to Montana before settling in Caldwell Idaho in 1949, where many cherished family memories were made. On August 20, 1960, she married the love of her life, Roger Dayle Wonenberg, a farmer in the Filer/Buhl area. They lived on the farm and raised their family and built a life centered on faith, family, and hard work. They were blessed with three sons—two who arrived early in their marriage and a surprise blessing twelve years later.

Mary was a devoted wife and mother, helping on the family farm while creating a loving home for her family. Faith was a cornerstone of her life for many years, she faithfully attended the Seventh-Day Adventist church in Twin Falls, Idaho, where she found great joy in teaching children’s Sabbath school and sharing her love of the gospel with the younger generation.

Besides being at home, Mary also worked for Dr. Kadlec, a job she loved and enjoyed. After leaving the doctor’s office, Mary worked as an interior decorator, taking classes in Georgia and Seattle for faux painting, she also did general painting and wallpaper projects, a career that allowed her to express her creativity and passion for beauty and colors. She took great pride in helping make homes warm, welcoming, and beautiful places for others.

Mary embraced life's simple pleasures. She enjoyed adventure, dining out, gardening, watching butterflies and hummingbirds, savoring cookies and coffee, shopping and especially traveling. Roger and Mary spent many winters in Arizona, and traveled to Africa with her brother and sister-in-law, which was a trip of a lifetime. There were many skiing and camping trips with family and friends. Her greatest joy, however, was her family. She treasured becoming a grandmother and later a great-grandmother, delighting in every new addition to the family and creating lasting memories with those she loved. The grandkids loved her Christmas cookies!

Mary will be remembered for her strong faith, kind heart, hardworking spirit, and deep love for family. Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched and the generations who were blessed to know her.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Joe, Jim, JoAnn, Patty and David; her husband. Rogerand her sister-in-law, Becky.
