Verna Darrow

January 30, 1919 — April 12, 2012

Verna Nielsen Darrow passed from this earth April 12, 2012, at River Rock Assisted Living Center in Buhl, Idaho, at the age of 93.
Verna was born at home in St. John, Idaho, on January 30, 1919 to Parley Curtis Nielsen and Mary Ivy Lusk Nielsen. Verna was raised on farms and ranches in the Malad, Idaho area with her older brother, Wayne and her younger sister, Fern.
Verna attended school in Malad, graduating frm Malad High School in 1937. In the fall of 1938, Verna and two of her best friends started school at Albion State Normal School. She graduated from Albion in the spring of 1940 and started teaching first and second grade in St. John that fall.
While attending Albion, Verna met a young farmer from Castleford named John Darrow. John kept the road hot between Castleford and Albion and then on to St. John the winter Verna was teaching there. Verna and John were married June 28, 1941, and spent the rest of their lives together on the family farm in the Castleford area.
Verna and John were blessed with three children - Sandra, Curt, and Bernice; nine grandchildren and twenty-five great-grandchildren. Verna was a very loving wife, mother, and grandmother.
Verna was a wonderful homemaker. She made everyone who came into her home feel welcome. They were also very well fed. Verna enjoyed doing volunteer work in the community. She enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and snowmobiling because she loved being with family, friends, and neighbors. She spent many hours working side by side with John and was an exceptional field boss when potatoes were still being harvested by hand.
Verna was preceded in death by her husband, John; her parents; brother, Wayne (Elda) Nielsen, and sister Fern (Frank) Wight. Verna is survived by daughters Sandra (Buzz) Mayden of Pocatello, Bernice (Doug) Bybee of Castleford, and son Curt (Shari) Darrow of Castleford, nine grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
Verna's family gives great thanks and appreciation to all at River Rock Assisted Living, A Promise of Hope Hospice, Dr. Robert Lobb, Dr. Daryl Ficklin, Dr. And Mrs. Julian Nicholson and their staff for the special loving care they gave Verna. You all meant so much to her.
The family suggests memorials to Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah, or Castleford QRU.
